Daughters of the British Empire Scholarship-Are you a woman of British or Commonwealth of Nations ancestry by birth or marriage? If so, this scholarship might be for you!

The Daughters of the British Empire (DBE), established over one hundred years ago, brings together women of British or Commonwealth birth, marriage or ancestry for fellowship and improving the lives of others. While our earliest philanthropic efforts focused on the establishment of homes for the aged were established (with two remaining – in Brookfield, Illinois and Sierra Madre, California), we have diversified and in 2018 a scholarship program was established to assist women in attaining their educational goals. We encourage you to identify and direct your eligible students to apply for this financial assistance. The Daughters of the British Empire Scholarship (formerly known as the Sarah Josephine Langstaff Memorial Scholarship) is open to women who would meet the eligibility requirements for membership, but who are not now nor have ever been a member of the organization. Applicants must have completed at least 24 credit hours / equivalent units of study at the college or university level with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and be enrolled at an accredited institution of higher learning as a full-time student seeking a degree. As the Fall Semester gets underway, it is time to focus on applying for funds for the Spring Semester, with our next application deadline being October 1, 2026. One $1,000 or two $500 scholarships are awarded annually in January in each of four geographical districts as listed:
EASTERN – Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia;
MIDWESTERN – Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin;
SOUTHERN – Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico;
WESTERN – Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming.
